Our focus on crop production and improvement is by taking a multidimensional look into the various factors that affect a planted crop such as the soil, the plant/crop itself, as well as climatic effects and other environmental conditions. Attempts would also be made by altering these factors to know the resultant effects.

The soil is probably the most important factor affecting plants growing on land, because not only does it serve as an anchor for these plants, it also serves as the source of nutrients, water and even useful organisms that positively affect the plants as well, ensuring their survival. The edaphic (soil) factors – soil moisture, air, temperature, mineral matter (macro- and micronutrients), organic matter, organisms (including microbes and higher organisms and reactions – should be investigated to see if it would improve the soil contents and the effects on the planted crops. All these will provide great insights into how specific soil types greatly influence the plants growing on them.

Another factor that should be considered is the cultivated plants themselves. Most plants being grown are raised primarily in two ways. One is through conventional breeding, which relies primarily on selection, using natural processes of sexual and asexual reproduction. The other is through genetic engineering, which utilizes a process of insertion of genetic material using various gene transfer methods. While the ability of a particular plant to thrive under some conditions might be due to superior selection from many generations, it can also through genetic modifications which may not be obvious. The sources of various most cultivated plants should be known as part of discovering why a plant survives or not. Recommendation of the necessary improvement methods that should also be made.

Finally, how do climatic and environmental conditions and factors affect a planted or growing crop? It is well known that the phenotypic or genotypic composition of any living organism is also heavily reliant on interaction with the environment. These factors, such as precipitation, temperature, atmospheric humidity, solar radiation, wind velocity, atmospheric gases, topography, altitude, steepness of slope, and exposure to light and wind, should be observed, and by experimentally varying them, we can discover their effects on plants viability and yields to be able to make good recommendations.
